This song is an incredibly popular song and many times people will listen to the music without even knowing what the lyrics are actually saying. In Jamaica this song has become such a part of the culture that almost every Jamaican knows this song. This song promotes the killing of homosexuals with it’s lyrics. Lyrics like, “Boom bye bye, inna battybwoy head, rude bwoy no promote no nasty man, dem haffi dead” says that the artist, Banton does not condone homosexual acts and that they should die. Another lyric such as, “ Hitch up on an rub up on, an lay down inna bed, hug up on another, anna feel up leg, send fi di matic an, di Uzi instead, shoot dem no come if we shot dem” also says if an individual is engaging in homosexual acts we should find a gun and shoot them. These lyrics actively police and reinforce ideas and behaviors that were taught during slavery. These ideas that homosexuality is wrong was introduced through religion and the belief that the “right” man is a heterosexual man. This belief was emphasized through the hypersexuality that took place as a result of men overcompensating for their masculinity that was devalued during the time of slavery.
