Thesis Statement

Hypersexuality, that was created as well as religious teachings that took place during the time of slavery has caused the discrimination against gays to be executed with ease throughout the society on the island of Jamaica. The idea that male slaves were animalistic and needed to be kept from the women; more specifically, the white woman deprived the men of feeling as if they were actually men. Later on they began to overcompensate in order to prove their masculinity to show who was more man than the others. This would later on lead to the mistreatment of gays on the island of Jamaica. The discrimination against gays that takes place in Jamaica happens due to multiple factors within the Jamaican society. Heterosexual men are seen as the “right” idea of what a man should be in regards to their sexual preference. Therefore, the Christian religion that was taught to the slaves emphasized the wrongfulness of homosexuality creating this negative idea that was continuously carried on and reinforced over time. Those who do not fit into this criteria are told that they do not belong and should simply just die. Some examples of these ideas can be found in music such as Buju Banton’s song Boom Bye Bye that was released in 1993 or Shabba Ranks song Mauma Man that was released in 1988. The policing of homosexuals within the Jamaican society is a result of hypersexuality and religious teachings.
